The primary breakdown structure usually corresponds to the traditional work breakdown structure (WBS), but need not do so.
Each element in the structure is a activity, which automatically inherits the date span of its children, and which automatically displays consolidated resource values. Since each element is a activity, you can assign resources to it - so that higher level activities can have contingencies or management overheads associated with them, for example - and can allocate progress and actuals (resource consumption values) to it as well.
Logic (relationships) can be applied between activities at any level in the primary structure, but the scheduler only takes account of logic between activities at the lowest level. This allows you to display generalised high level links between work packages whilst retaining the true project network at the detail level.
